LNG: Ukraine's Foreign Minister Urges EU to Ban Russian LNG

Ukraine's foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, called for the EU to ban Russian LNG imports, saying an increase in 2024 was "unacceptable.", S&P Global said.

  • Russian LNG imports to the EU "must be banned as part of further sanctions," Sybiha added with replacement supplies available from the US and elsewhere.
  • Russian LNG deliveries to the EU surged 23% in 2024 to a record high of 21bcm, as Russia holds a market share of around 18% and the second largest LNG supplier to the region, IEA analyst Greg Molnar said.
  • Complex shipping logistics could challenge Yamal LNG exports to northeast Asian and boost Russian LNG deliveries to the EU in 2025, Molnar said. The EU now accounts for around 78% of the total Yamal LNG exports.
