UN GA Votes To Suspend Russia From UN Human Rights Council

UN

The UN General Assembly has voted to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council.

  • 93 members voted in favor, 24 countries voted against, and 58 members abstained.
  • The measure was led by the US in response to alleged Russian war crimes perpetrated in occupied Ukrainian territory.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke to the UNSC this week and demanded the expulsion of Russia from the Security Council. This is highly unlikely given the veto held by both Russia and China. Zelensky believes that there would be a legal avenue to pursue Russia's expulsion from the Security Council if a case can be made that Russia is not the legal heir to the USSR Security Council seat.
  • This is unlikely to happen as there is precedent of rump states inheriting the status of larger states. Moreover the Russian Federation assumed the debt and international responsibilities of the Soviet State.
