Underwhelming Opinion Polls Spark Pre-Election Angst Within LDP

Asahi reports that some people within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party have expressed a sense of concern ahead of the looming general election following the release of initial approval ratings for the freshly inaugurated Kishida Cabinet. Asahi cited an unnamed former LDP minister suggesting that "low" ratings have caused anxiety among party officials.

  • Opinion poll results conducted immediately after the inauguration of the Kishida Cabinet showed that the new administration is starting off from a relatively low base. The rate of public support for Kishida's government is considerably lower than those recorded for most freshly inaugurated administrations in recent years.
  • Japanese voters will head to the polls for a general election on October 31 after a 12-day campaigning period.
