Union To Strike At BHP Mine, BCCh Costa Speaking

  • One of the main unions at BHP’s Escondida copper mine in Chile rejected a company proposal to address alleged contract and safety breaches, the union said in a statement Thursday.
    • Members of Union No. 1 will stage strikes on Nov. 28 and Nov. 30 unless BHP agrees to improve safety conditions.
    • The company says it has the highest health and safety standards in the industry, with stoppages announced for next week “baseless and detrimental to everyone”. (BBG)
  • Separately, Chile’s giant copper and lithium mines have been able to keep producing at normal rates despite ongoing trucker strikes. However, they have voiced warnings that prolonged disruptions to the supply of inputs will start to have an impact.
  • Currently speaking at an event, central bank President, Rosanna Costa, has reiterated that Chile’s key rate has reached the cycle peak and that inflation is showing signs of moderation. However, she also noted it is too early to talk of a change in CPI trend and that it is essential to continue with adjustments for the Chilean economy.
