Unions Call for Higher Minimum Wage as Inflation Looks Set to Rise Above 20%

TURKEY
  • Turkish workers’ unions issued a joint statement Tuesday on the current minimum wage negotiations, saying that the minimum wage that is to be effective as of Jan. 1, 2022, should be determined after considering recent developments in the national economy
  • Statement noted the rise should make it possible for a worker and their family to “live humanely” according to the economic and social conditions of the day, and that “it has to be compatible with human dignity.”
  • Recently, one of the top business associations in Turkey voiced its support for a hike for the minimum wage above inflation to ease pressures on households stemming from a rise in consumer prices.
  • The private sector currently sides with the increase; but believe it should be implemented by reducing some of the minimum wage tax burdens on the employer
