Unit Labor Costs Surge More Than 8% Annualized In Q2

CANADA DATA
  • Labor productivity fell -0.61% Q/Q non-annualized in Q2 (cons -0.5) after an even weaker than first thought -0.77% Q/Q in Q1 (initial -0.60).
  • In trend terms, it meant extending a fifth consecutive quarterly decline which without the +0.1% of 1Q22 would have meant a decline in productivity in every quarter since 3Q20.
  • With hourly compensation rising 1.5% Q/Q, it meant ULCs increased an extremely strong 2.1% Q/Q, equating to 8.6% annualized for its fastest quarter since 1Q22.
  • Despite the hawkish implications to the data, there has been very little reaction in FI space, although it could help act as a springboard in the event of any hawkish surprises in the BoC’s statement at 1000ET.
