United Steelworkers Endorse Biden

US

The Untied Steelworkers have issued a statement formally endorsing US President Joe Biden's re-election bid - a significant win for the White House which has aggressive pursued the union vote.

  • USW International President David McCall said in a statement: “President Biden proved time and again during his first term that he stands with working families.”
  • McCall added: “President Biden, through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Inflation Reduction Act and other pro-worker legislation, is making good on his promise to create good, union jobs and healthier communities across the country."
  • The USW endorsement may have been eased by Biden's decision last week to publicly oppose Japan's Nippon Steel's proposed USD$15 billion takeover of US Steel. A deal also opposed by former President Donald Trump.
  • USW has around 850,000 members, making it one of the largest unions in the manufacturing sector - a key bloc in rust belt states which may be central to determining the 2024 presidential election result.
  • Biden picked up the endorsement of United Auto Workers (roughly one million members) in late January and is currently pursing an endorsement from the Teamsters which has around 1.3 million members.
  • Teamsters boss Sean O'Brien said after a White House meeting this month that the union would consult with members and announce an endorsement, "most likely after the (Republican and Democratic parties') conventions" in July/August.
