US Airline Passengers to Increase but Jet Demand Still Lags 2019

JET FUEL

Jet fuel consumption and oil demand is expected to see a boost from a record number of passengers travelling on US airlines this summer according to industry group Airlines for America.

  • US airlines passenger numbers are expected to be around 1% above 2019 levels at 257m passengers from June to August this year.
  • Jet fuel demand is expected to lag the increase in air travel partly due to deployment of 9.6% more seats by using 5.1% larger aircraft compared to last year. Larger planes carrying more passengers are generally more efficient than smaller aircraft.
  • US jet fuel demand so far this year is 3% higher than in 2022 but still 10% lower than in 2019 according to US Energy Information Administration data.
