US Amb-Need To Galvanise World To Ensure China Can't Intimidate Taiwan

MNI (London) - US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns speaking at a US Chamber of Commerce events states that the Chinese gov't can be 'difficult' to deal with, requiring a bipartisan approach from US lawmakers. States that 'there is a need to galvanise the rest of the world to make sure China cannot get away with coercion or intimidation against Taiwan.' Earlier today, the Chinese military voiced its anger after a US Navy aircraft flew through the Strait of Taiwan, saying that it 'endangered peace' in the region.

  • On the 'spy balloon' incident earlier in Feb, Burns states that China 'lost global influence and credibility' over the matter, and that blaming the US for the incident was 'a little bit Orwellian.'
  • On COVID, Burns states that the US gov't must push Beijing to be 'more honest' about the origins of the virus in Wuhan.
  • Later in the week, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is set to attend the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in New Delhi, India. There is the prospect of a sidelines meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang, which would be the first in-person ministerial meeting between US and Chinese officials since the balloon incident.
