US and EU Diesel Margins Finding Strength this Week

Diesel refining margins in both Europe and the US have hit all-time highs this week as French refinery strikes add fuel to their surge.

  • Benchmark European diesel refining margins and US distillate margins hit a record high of around $77 a barrel on Monday, although they eased to around $68 on Tuesday.
  • Margins have strengthened as the Russian product ban grows closer, as well as a culmination of refinery maintenance and the French strikes.
  • The French strikes show little signs of a breakthrough which has prompted the French government to say they remain open to intervening.
  • Despite the upcoming ban, Russian diesel accounted for 31% of European diesel imports in September, making it the largest exporter.
