US-CHINA: Biden To Meet Xi On Margins Of APEC Summit In Peru

US-CHINA
MNI London: US President Joe Biden will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the margins of the APEC summit in Peru on Saturday, Nov. 14, according to a senior Biden administration official. The official didn't elaborate on what Biden might discuss with Xi but relations with Russia and bilateral efforts to reduce narcotics trafficking are likely to be high on the agenda.

  • The meeting is likely to be the last between the pair before US President-elect Donald Trump asumes office on January 20, 2025.
  • CBS notes: "This will be their third in-person meeting since Mr. Biden took office. The two leaders last met in person one year ago, in Woodside, California."
  • VOA notes that the official said: "Russia, cross-strait issues, the South China Sea and cyber are areas the next administration is going to need to think about carefully, because those are areas of deep policy difference with China, and I don't expect that will disappear."
  • The meeting comes as Trump looks to stock his second-term cabinet with vocal China critics, including Rep Michael Waltz (R-FL) as National Security Advisor and Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) as his Secretary of State. The primary focus of the next few months is to what extent Trump will follow through with punitive tariffs outlined on the campaign trail.
  • MNI noted recent market speculation that more pro-tariff Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick may be firming as a choice for Trump's Treasury Secretary, see: US OUTLOOK/OPINION: Treasury Secretary Speculation Helping Boost USD?
