Wires carrying comments from US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield. Says that a hostages-for-ceasefire in Gaza deal is 'now in sight'. Thomas-Greenfield 'urges Security Council members to use their leverage to pressure Hamas to accept the US 'bridging proposal',' Thomas-Greenfield: "Israel has accepted the bridging proposal. Now, Hamas must do the same,"
- Also calls on UNSC members to continue sending messages to other actors in the region 'to avoid actions that would move away from finalising this deal.'
- The optimism of these comments is tempered somewhat by the continued uncertainty as to Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's comments regarding the continued presence of Israeli troops in Gaza post-ceasefire (see 'ISRAEL: WaPo-US Off. Believe Hamas Ldr Backs Deal, But Waiting For Iran Response' 0956BST).
- One notable meeting taking place comes on Monday 26 August, with Qatari PM and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani set to visit Tehran for talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
- The expectations of an Iranian or Iranian proxy strike on Israel have led to heightened tensions in the region for several weeks, but the advent of the latest round of talks has seen these tensions recede. Al Thani will be expected to push Iran both to avoid escalation with Israel and pressure Hamas into accepting the 'bridging proposal'.
