US: House Republicans Eye Government Funding Deal This Week

US

House Republican leadership appears set on a mid-March end date for a Continuing Resolution to punt government funding beyond the FY24 deadline of December 20. The new deadline would give Congress a short sprint to legislate new funding before sequestration from the 2023 Fiscal Responsibility Act triggers tens of billions of dollars of cuts to defence and non-defence spending - an action that a bipartisan majority of lawmakers want to avoid.

  • Punchbowl News reports, “there’s no deal yet on a CR. But there’s also not going to be a shutdown either. Democrats have no interest in it, and Republicans want to avoid anything to derail their move toward full control of Washington once Trump is back in office. Senior Hill aides say a deal could come together this week.”
  • Punchbowl adds that, “finding a new end date isn’t going to be easy. Trump and OMB nominee Russell Vought have promised big spending cuts next year while also extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts. The CR vote sets a new deadline for that political struggle to move into hyper speed.”
  • The Washington Post notes the White House has also asked for $99 billion in disaster relief and $24 billion for Ukraine to pass along with the upcoming funding bill — $16 billion to replenish U.S. weapons stockpiles and $8 billion for security assistance... But Johnson, who was willing to lose his job earlier this year to fund Ukraine, posted on social media that he won’t allow this tranche of funding to move forward.”
