US Launched Two Strikes on Houthi Rebels

The US launched two separate strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen and intercepted a missile, amid increasing tensions in the Red Sea.

  • American forces destroyed a Houthi surface-to-air missile they said was being prepared for launch at around 3:30PM Sanaa time on Wednesday. Five hours later, the USS Carney intercepted a Houthi anti-ship missile fired toward the Gulf of Aden and also shot down three drones in the area, according to US Central Command.
  • The US Central Command forces also conducted strikes against a Houthi UAV ground control station and ten Houthi one-way UAVs on 1 February 1:30AM (Sanaa time), it said via X.
  • It presented and imminent threat to merchant vessels and the US Navy ships in the region, it said. They strikes were in self-defence, it added.
  • On Wednesday, the Houthi rebels targeted an attack on the 8,6000-teu container ship Koi according to Reuters.
  • The British maritime security firm Ambrey on Wednesday said that a merchant vessel reported an explosion on its starboard after it was targeted with a missile while underway 69nm southwest of Aden, Yemen. "Ambrey was aware that a missile was fired from Dimnat Khadir District, Taiz Governorate, Yemen," it added in an advisory note.
  • The vessel prior to the incident waited around nine days before deciding to sail via the Suez Canal.
