US Military To Conduct Guyana Flight Ops Amid Venezuela Tensions

POLITICAL RISK

US Southern Command has confirmed that in collaboration with the Guyana Defence Force, it will conduct flight operations within Guyana on 7 Dec. The statement from the US Embassy in Georgetown states that "This exercise builds upon routine engagement and operations to enhance security partnership between the United States and Guyana, and to strengthen regional cooperation.

[...] The U.S. will continue its commitment as Guyana’s trusted security partner and promoting regional cooperation and interoperability."

  • The flights come amid increasing tensions in Latin America following the Venezuelan referendum over the weekend regarding the oil-rich Guayana Esequiba region, which the Maduro gov't in Caracas claims historically belongs to Venezuela.
  • Expectations of any military conflict are low, with the referendum viewed by many external observers as more about Maduro attempting to shore up his support with nationalistic sentiment amid extreme economic turmoil, rather than a legitimate threat to annex the region.
  • Nevertheless, the clear sign from the US of its support for Guyana and the increase in Brazilian troops posted on its northern border clearly raises security tensions in the region.
