US NSA Sullivan-Return To Iran Nuclear Deal 'Remains Live Possibility'

SECURITY

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan speaking at the Center for a New American Security 2022 conference on a number of topics. On Iran says that a US return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA, the Iran nuclear deal) 'remains a live possibility'. Says that there is a deal on the table and that, "Really the ball is in Iran's court and we'll see what happens in the coming next few days."

  • Sullivan also speaks on some other US security issues (comments from anti-war US think-tank the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft):
    • On Ukraine: we think this will have to end through diplomacy and we want the Ukrainians to be in the strongest position to negotiate. Our job is to give them the tools they need to do that.
    • On new weapons to Ukraine: we anticipate we will be sending more HIMARs (rocket systems). President Biden spoke with Zelenskyy yesterday and talked 'in detail' about weapons requests.
    • Sullivan: China and Russia are autocratic systems that are looking to make the world order in their image. We want to protect the liberal rules based order we helped to create against this challenge.
    • Sullivan: We have not seen any material support from China to Russia in Ukraine War or violation of sanctions.
    • Sullivan: I fully expect Sweden and Finland to join NATO, calls it a "historic outcome... that will massive enhance the alliance."
