US NSA Sullivan-Significant Progress On Deal But Issues Still Outstanding

Al Jazeera reporting comments from US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, says that, "We have made significant progress, but there are still outstanding issues to return Iran to the nuclear deal".

  • Sullivan: "We will work closely with international partners to increase pressure on Iran if diplomacy does not work".
  • Speaking on 23 March, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian stated that the parties were "closer to an agreement in Vienna than ever before," Added that, "If the U.S. acts pragmatically, we are ready to have foreign ministers of countries belonging to the nuclear deal's joint commission gather in Vienna to finalise the agreement,"
  • There remains a significant amount of uncertainty as to the prospect of a deal being reached to bring Iran back into the nuclear deal. Western nations seen as keen to get Iran back into compliance to open up other sources of oil given various bans on Russian oil.
  • Iran direct or fhte International Crisis Group, a foriegn policy think tank based in Brussels, has the chances of a deal being reached at 50/50.
