US Officials Continue To Hint At Cautious Response To Jordan Attack

SECURITY

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller has told reporters at the White House that the administration will, "make clear to everyone in the region that we don't seek conflict with Iran."

  • Miller's comments are consistent with remarks in recent days suggesting the US response to Sunday's attack from an Iran-affiliated militant group on US personnel in Jordan will fall short of direct military action inside Iran, considered the major risk for markets.
  • Asked on the US response, Miller says he won't preview any specific actions, but the US response, "won't be escalatory."
  • Since the Jordan attack, the State Department has issued numerous statements on measures taken to limit financing available to Iran's IRGC Quds force and various Iranian proxies in the region.
  • White House National Security Advisor John Kirby, speaking at the White House, says: "We don't seek a war with Iran, we're not looking for a broader conflict."
  • Kirby says that because the Jordan attack took the lives of three US personnel, "we will do what we need to do to make sure those responsible are held accountable," but again declines to offer specifics on the response.
  • The security risk environment in the region remains heightened, particularly in the Red Sea where, "the U.S. struck a Houthi anti-aircraft surface-to-air missile that was prepared to launch in Yemen today. This is the first time the U.S. struck an anti-aircraft missile in Yemen," according to a US official cited by Fox News.
