US Sanctions 150 Entities Linked W/ Shipping Western Tech To Russia

US-RUSSIA

The US has announced "wide ranging" new sanctions on around 150 foreign companies and individuals for allegedly shipping American or other Western technology to Russia.

  • Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement: “With today’s sanctions, the United States is continuing our relentless work to target Russia’s military supply chains and deprive Putin of the equipment, technology, and services he needs to wage his barbaric war on Ukraine.... today’s actions show our global reach in imposing severe costs on Putin’s oligarchs.”
  • Treasury Department: "Today’s actions continue [Office of Foreign Assets Control]'s sustained efforts to target individuals and entities that enable—or attempt to enable—Russia’s ability to procure high-tech and dual-use goods."
  • The Wall Street Journal reports that measures are designed to counter avenues for Russia to acquire tech, "by buying them through countries such as China, Turkey, Hungary and the United Arab Emirates."
  • WSJ: "Western diplomats and security officials have in recent months jetted around the globe seeking to convince those governments to enforce their prohibitions, sharing intelligence on those aiding Moscow and helping grow their bureaucratic capacity to crack down on illicit activities."
