US Sec State Blinken To Clarify Erdogan's NATO Remarks In Berlin

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in Berlin for scheduled meetings with foreign ministers of NATO over this weekend.

  • His trip comes amidst a developing story that Turkey may exercise its NATO veto to block Finnish and Swedish applications to the alliance.
  • Assistant Secretary of State Karen Donfried issued a statement recently: 'Secretary Blinken will work with counterparts across Europe this weekend to "clarify" Turkey's position on Finland and Sweden's potential membership.'
  • US President Joe Biden spoke to Sweden's PM and Finland's President a short time ago per White House: 'President Biden held a secure call this morning with Prime Minister Andersson of Sweden and President Niinistö of Finland from 9:50 AM – 10:27 AM EDT.'
  • Blinken will attend an informal meeting with foreign ministers of NATO in Berlin tomorrow. The secretary will then attend the US-EU Trade and Technology Council in Paris on May 15.
  • A leader level NATO ministerial is scheduled to take place in Madrid in June.
