US: Senate Democrats May Offer Less Resistance To Trump Nominees Than In 2017

US

Senate Democrats appear prepared to allow President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet and other Executive Branch nominees a smoother ride through Senate confirmation than they did in 2017, when Senators Elizabeth Warren (R-MA), Corey Brooker (D-NJ), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and then first-term Senator Kamala Harris voted down the majority of Trump's nominees.

  • Semafor reports: "Trump nominees like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. [DHHS], Pete Hegseth [Defense] and Tulsi Gabbard [DNI] probably won’t get many Democratic votes, according to interviews with a half-dozen of the party’s senators, spanning the party’s ideological spectrum. But a repeat of the rage the party channeled in public eight years ago looks unlikely."
  • Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) said in a statement to Fox News: “If you vote against everyone, then you lose whatever value or whatever statement that you’re trying to make.”
  • Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) said: “We should make a good faith effort to exercise our constitutional responsibility. I am not for foot-dragging. The president ought to have this team in place,”
  • Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) expressed doubts about Hegseth for Defense Secretary but said: “They don’t have to agree with me on anything.... I’m not in the category of, like, ‘try to slow him down.’ Because if he has the right people, I want them in those positions as early as possible. I think it’s the best thing for our country.”
