Newswires reporting that the US will send additional troops to the Middle East amid an escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, according to a Pentagon statement.
- The report comes amid a flurry of headlines on the conflict, including claims that an IDF strike in Beirut may have killed high-ranking Hezbollah southern front commander, Ali Karaki.
- Regional expert Charles Lister notes: "If Ali Karaki was just killed in Beirut, Israel will have crippled Hezbollah's military leadership -- leaving only (1) Hassan Nasrallah & (2) Abu Ali Rida still alive. Devastating intelligence penetration."
- Shashank Joshi, defence editor at the Economist, writes on X: "IDF just appears to have killed the one of the two remaining figures on their chart of Hezbollah's high command (Karaki). If IDF is eliminating the leadership, taking out arms dumps & steadily degrading the group, what is the incentive for Hizbullah not to fire off its arsenal?"
- In a video message posted on X a short time ago, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Lebanese citizens to "get out of harm's way" stressing that civilians should "take this warning seriously."
- Netanyahu: "I have a message for the people of Lebanon: Israel's war is not with you. It's with Hezbollah. For too long, Hezbollah has been using you as human shields. It placed rockets in your living rooms and missiles in your garage."
