White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and his incoming successor, Rep Mike Waltz (R-FL), promised a smooth transition in security policy after a meeting last week.
- Sullivan said: "He and I obviously don't see eye to eye on every issue. But I am very much looking forward to engaging him over these next 60 days ... so that we can have this smooth handoff."
- Waltz told Fox News: “For our adversaries out there that think this is a time of opportunity, that they can play one administration off the other, they’re wrong and we are hand in glove. We are one team with the United States in this transition.”
- Walz's remarks came amid a string of comments from national security and intelligence Republicans that appear to point to a moderate overhaul of foreign policy. The ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator James Risch (R-ID), told the Halifax Security Forum in Nova Scotia over the weekend that Trump’s return to the White House won’t necessarily spell the end of support for Ukraine.
- Senator Mike Rounds (R-SD), similarly defended support for Ukraine at the Halifax Forum: “We need to ask ourselves—do we really think this tyrant [Russian President Vladimir Putin] will stop if you give him part of a free country?"
- Evelyn Farkas, the executive director of the McCain Center, said at Halifax: "The mood seems to be more ‘let’s see what Trump does’ … though privately some people are concerned."
