WASHINGTON (MNI) - Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said Thursday he
remains "very focused" in working with Congress to increase the statutory debt
ceiling in a timely way.
During a hearing before the House Financial Services Committee, Mnuchin
said he believes it's important to increase the debt ceiling as quickly as
possible.
He said he prefers Congress deal with the debt ceiling before leaving for
the August recess, but added that Treasury believes the debt ceiling should be
increased no later than the end of September.
Mnuchin said he has "no intent" to begin prioritizing various government
payments.
The Congressional Budget Office has said that Congress should deal with the
debt ceiling by the middle of October
