VdL Asks Irish Gov't For 2 Comm Noms After Hogan's Resignation

EU COMMISSION

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has officially requested two nominations for a new European Commissioner from the Irish gov't following the resignation of Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan late on Wednesday.

  • VdL has requested that one man and one woman are nominated.
  • She adds "As Europe fights to reduce the spread of the coronavirus and Europeans make sacrifices and accept painful restrictions, I expect the members of the college to be particularly vigilant about compliance with applicable rules,". This all follows Hogan's resignation that came after he breached Irish COVID-19 restrictions to attend a golfing dinner, followed by a denial seen as evasive, and a poorly-received television interview.
