EU-RUSSIA: VdL-Ukraine Membership Talks Possible In Early 2025

EU-RUSSIA

Ahead of two days of high-profile EU summits, wires report comments from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. She, along with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, Polish PM Donald Tusk, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, and European Council President António Costa, will hold a dinner with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Brussels later this evening. Discussions set to focus on the level of support European partners can offer amid continued Russian advances in the Donbas and critical threats to Ukraine's energy infrastructure posed by Russian aerial bombardment.

  • Earlier, VdL claimed that EU membership talks with Ukraine were possible in early 2025. Comes a day after TVP World speculated that PM Tusk, who visited the western Ukrainiain city of Lviv on 17 Dec, could use Poland's presidency of the Council of the European Union in H125 to fast-track Ukraine's accession.
  • VdL also said that the next sanctions package on Russia is already in preparation. Rikard Jozwiak at RFE/RL says that it is set to be presented to member states in January. Talk of a new sanctions package comes just days after member states signed off on the 15th package, including sanctions against Russia's 'shadow fleet' of oil tankers. As with previous sanctions packages, there remains the prospect of objections and vetos from Hungary and Slovakia in exchange for EU concessions.
