Talks between Venezuela and Guyana officials on Thursday over its Essequibo dispute yielded further support to avoid violence or threats.

  • Brazilian officials helped to mediate talks between the two nations as Venezuelan claims for the oil rich region have intensified.
  • "We agree on the need to continue... through diplomatic channels," Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil told reporters in the Brazilian capital after the meeting.
  • Guyanese Foreign Minister Hugh Todd expressed confidence that the next meeting will bring "real advances."
