Venezuela Begins Freeing Prisoners as Part of Sanctions Relief Measures

Venezuela has released five prisoners, including a well-known opposition figure as part of Washington's demand that certain prisoners be freed this week in return for temporarily eased sanctions on its oil & gas sector.

  • The Biden Administration has given Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro until the end of November to begin lifting bans on opposition presidential candidates and start releasing political prisoners and "wrongfully detained" Americans.
  • The US is prepared to reverse sanctions relief measures unless Maduro abides by Washington demands.
