Venezuela has until April to Meet Sanction Deal Commitments: Kirby

Venezuela’s president Nicolas Maduro has until April to honour democratic commitments made in exchange for sanction relief, according to National Security Council Spokesman John Kirby.

  • Kirby added that to date, Venezuela has not taken the steps agreed upon.
  • The six-month sanction relief on Venezuela’s energy sector will expire in April if not extended.
  • Earlier reports from officials speaking anonymously to Bloomberg said that the US will allow the sanctions relief to expire if Maduro continues to block opposition candidate María Corina Machado from running in the upcoming election set for 2024.
  • The US is also considering additional measures against Venezuela, officials said.
