Venezuelan Opposition Left Without Candidate as Energy Sanctions Loom

Venezuela’s opposition coalition has been left without a candidate for July’s presidential election after 80-year-old Corina Yoris was unable to register before Monday’s deadline.

  • “The system cannot be accessed and we have exhausted all the means at our disposal so that this can be resolved,” Yoris said.
  • She had been put forward as replacement candidate after Maria Corina Machado was banned from running against President Nicolas Maduro.
  • Two people close to Machado were arrested last week, ratcheting tensions with Washington ahead of the oil and gas sanctions waiver which is set to expire April 18 and at this point looks unlikely to be renewed due to a lack of election progress.
