Von Der Leyen: Low Expectations On Russia Sanctions In Next 48 Hours

Delivering doorstep comments at the EU Council special meeting in Brussels, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen states that she has 'low expectations' on the EU being able to deliver agreement on the sixth package of sanctions against Russia in the next 48 hours.

  • Adds that "I expect a deal on Russia sanctions in the days after".
  • Says that all issues on sanctions are resolved apart from those regarding crude oil being delivered by pipeline. Hungary seen as pushing for no sanctions on pipeline deliveries (the method by which Hungary recieves its Russian oil).
  • Member state ambassadors met on Sunday and this morning in an attempt to reach a last-minute deal on the issue, but it seems that these talks were unsuccessful. EU has stated that the issue will not be subject to official discussions at the leaders' meeting.
