Vote To Elect New Speaker Of House Of Representatives Underway Shortly

US

The House of Representatives is shortly due to begin the process of electing a new speaker. Today's speaker rollcall will be the fourth since House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was ousted on October 4. The action on the floor can be followed here: C-SPAN

  • Republican nominee, Rep Mike Johnson (R-LA), vice chair of the Republican conference, would be the most inexperienced house speaker in modern Congressional history if elected.
  • What will happen today: A quorum will be taken of all present members. This will set the "magic number" required to win the vote. If all members are present, the number will be 217 - meaning Johnson can drop only four Republican votes and still win the gavel.
  • Following the quorum call, members will give nominating speeches. Johnson's name will be formally put forward by a GOP rep. Democrats will nominate House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) as they have in all 18 speaker ballots this year.
  • The first rollcall is likely to take place at around 13:00 ET 18:00 BST.
  • Johnson appears in the strongest position of any of the previous GOP nominees and is heavily favoured to win. The political pressure on House Republicans, and fatigue from the extended paralysis, point to a resolution this week. If Johnson is not elected we expect moderate Republicans to move to empower Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-NC) and reopen the House.
