VP Harris Likely Needed To Break Tie On COVID-19 Bill: Dem Senate Aide-RTRS

Reuters reporting that according to a Democratic US Senate aide, Vice-President Kamala Harris is likely to be be required to break a 50-50 tie in the Senate on the first vote relating to the administration's USD1.9trn COVID-19 relief package.

  • Aide also states that Democratic Senate leaders are looking forward to move forward with votes at 1300ET (1800GMT, 1900CET) this afternoon.
  • Republican Senators are expected to request a full reading of the COVID-19 relief bill (the American Rescue Plan), which will take anything from 4-10 hours according to observers.
  • This will then be followed by around 20 hours of debate according to Politico's Burgess Everett, after which a vote-a-rama will likely take place on Friday. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has stated his intention for the vote-a-rama on amendments with no chance of passing should last 'until infinity'.
