WAGES: Construction Union Going For “Significant” Wage Increase

AUSTRALIA

In an interview with The Australian, the incoming head of the construction division of the CFMEU has said that the union will push for “significant” wage increases. Construction tends to be a leader in private sector wages and was able to gain 5% increases before the pandemic in commercial construction.

  • It also wants to insert clauses to convert casual workers into permanent employees after a certain number of weeks, reduce the use of labour hire and ensure more apprentices. Agreements have already expired in Queensland and are due to conclude in NSW, Victoria and WA over 2023.
  • The Electrical Trades Union has said it will demand at least 5% annual pay increases in negotiations this year.
  • Employer organisations have warned against multi-year agreements based on the current historically high inflation and that wage increases should also reflect productivity gains.
