Wang Yi: Iran-Saudi Deal "Good News" For "Turbulent World"

China's top diplomat Wang Yi has declared China's role in the restoration of ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia, "a victory in peace."

  • "China will continue to play constructive role in properly handling hotspot issues in the world in accordance with wishes of all countries."
  • Beijing's central role in brokering the deal has raised the prospect of alternate diplomatic approach to restraining Iran's nuclear programme and provided substantiation for Beijing's claim that it can act as a credible mediator in Ukraine.
  • China is a signatory to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action Iranian nuclear accord and has made overtures recently at a resurrection of the deal with greater input from Arab states.
  • Fan Hongda, a leading Chinese expert on Iran, said following Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's Beijing trip: “Judging from what President Xi said to the Iranian president in Beijing, I think China really wants to advance the JCPOA negotiations. Beijing does not want to see the Iran Deal abandoned.”
