WaPo: Senate Dem To Unveil Russia Sanctions Bill Today With WH Support

US

Washington Post reporting that Senate Democrats, led by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez (D-NJ), will present a bill today to place sanctions on Russia in the event of an invasion of Ukraine. The story also states that the bill has recieved the backing of the White House.

  • The bill is intended to scupper the prospect of another sanctions bill from Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) intended to place sanctions on firms working to complete the Nord Stream II natural gas pipeline from Russia to Germany.
  • A number of Democrats had shown a potential intent to vote for the Cruz bill, which the Biden administration has stated could damage relations with Germany. This new bill could provide a way for hawkish Dems to signal intent on taking a tough line on Russia without voting for the Cruz sanctions package.
