Western Gov'ts Warn Afghan Evac Entering Final 24hrs

SECURITY

A number of Western govt's are warning that their efforts to evacuate nationals and dual nationals from Hamid Karzai Airport In Kabul are entering their final 24 hours due to what they say is the imminent threat of a terrorist attack at the airport.

  • The US, UK, and Belgian embassies have all issued security alerts at the airport, with the UK due to announce their final evacuation flight today (after it has taken off in an attempt to avoid chaos on the ground).
  • All gov'ts have warned that they will not be able to evacuate all Afghans who worked with Coalition forces, instead instructing them to attempt to leave Afghanistan via its land borders (an extremely risky tactic given Taliban control of the nation's border posts).
  • The chaotic scenes in Afghanistan continue to damage the credibility of Western gov'ts, most notably the those with the two largest armed forces contributions to Afghanistan - the US and the UK.
  • The approval ratings of the UK and US gov'ts, and of Prime Minister Boris Johnson and President Joe Biden, have dropped notably over the past week as the evacuation effort have continued.
