Westminster Looks To Smooth GB-NI Trade, Risks Breaking NI Protocol

Adam Payne at The House magazine tweets a thread on gov'ts stealthy announcement of what appears to be a unilateral break of the NI protocol:

  • "Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis tells MPs that later today he'll set out in a written statement details of a "new operation plan" for supermarkets and suppliers sending goods from GB to NI. Lewis says that while the UK has had "pragmatic" discussions w/ the EU about the NI Protocol, "we're going to be taking forward a series of further temporary operational steps" to help businesses with GB-NI trade. This is confirmation that the UK will be taking unilateral action."
  • "Boris Johnson says the UK is putting into place "temporary operational easings" to protect areas of GB-NI trade like food supplies "pending further discussions with the EU"."
