WH: Biden Willing To Work With Congress On US-Saudi Relations, Re: OPEC+ Cut

US

White House National Security Spokesperson John Kirby has told reporters that President Biden is "re-evaluating its relationship with Saudi Arabia after the OPEC+ decision on output."

  • Kirby: "Biden is willing to work with Congress on future Saudi relations."
  • Comes as Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Bob Menendez (R-NJ) yesterday urged the US to halt cooperation with Saudi Arabia, saying the OPEC decision to cut oil production by 2mbpd would “help underwrite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war.”
  • Menendez: “The United States must immediately freeze all aspects of our cooperation with Saudi Arabia, including any arms sales and security cooperation beyond what is absolutely necessary to defend U.S. personnel and interests.”
  • Menendez continued, “There simply is no room to play both sides of this conflict – either you support the rest of the free world in trying to stop a war criminal [...] or you support him.”
  • The US currently provides material support for the Saudi-led war with Houthi rebels in Yemen. Menendez is the latest in a string of Democrat lawmakers to publicly state that the US should use leverage in the supply of military hardware to rebuke Saudi Arabia for the OPEC+ decision.
