WH Kirby: No Indication Hezbollah Has Made Decision To Expand Conflict

SECURITY

White House National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby has told reporters that the US has seen, "no indication that Hezbollah has made the decision to expand conflict."

  • Edited to include additional quote on wider conflict (17:59BST)
  • Kirby: "US has not seen any other external actor indicate willingness to widen Israel-Hamas conflict."
  • Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based militant group, is much larger and better equipped that Hamas. Hezbollah also has far deeper links with Iran, who while a backer of Hamas, is more ideologically linked to Hezbollah meaning any involvement from Hezbollah is more likely to raise the risk of a direct confrontation with Iran.
  • Kirby's comments may decrease some tensions after a flurry of unsubstantiated reports today pointed toward increased military activity on the border between Israel and Lebanon.
  • These reports should be treated with caution as the fog of war and less regulated conditions on social media have led to an increased prevalence of misinformation surrounding the facts on the ground.
