White House Appears To Confirm Biden-Xi Meeting At APEC Summit

US-CHINA

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has appeared to confirm to reporters that Chinese President Xi Jinping will travel to the US to attend next month's APEC Leaders' Summit in San Francisco.

  • Jean-Pierre says, when asked if the administration plans "to ease sanctions or lower tariffs" to make sure the meeting between Biden and Xi takes place: "Our policy hasn't changed. This is intense competition... Intense competition means intense diplomacy, that's what the President is going to be doing and having a tough but important conversation."
  • Jean-Pierre continues: "I'm not gonna get into any kind of decisions made on this, this is about diplomatic conversations... This is about competition. That's what we want to see with China and this is going to be an important diplomatic conversation..."
  • Jean-Pierre: "I'm not going to get into details about this meeting that's going to happen next month... It's going to be in San Francisco. It's going to be a constructive meeting. The President's looking forward to it."
  • When pressed on if the meeting is happening, Jean-Pierre says, "yes... we've been clear about that."
