White House: Biden Asia Trip To Go Ahead As Planned

US

White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby has told reporters that President Biden will depart for his week-long trip to Asia on Wednesday, as planned, countering concerns that the White House might cancel the travel to conduct further talks on the debt ceiling.

  • Biden will leave on Wednesday to attend the G7 Leaders Summit in Hiroshima, Japan, 19-21 May and hold a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on May 18.
  • The White House indicated over the weekend that Biden’s subsequent travel to Australia and Papua New Guinea may be cut from his schedule if progress isn’t made in debt ceiling talks tomorrow.
  • Kirby also told reporters that "the US continues to see indications" that Russia and Iran are expanding cooperation in defence and the US is set to announce measures to counter military trade between the two countries.
