White House Dismisses Prospect Of Republican Debt Limit Resolution

US

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has responded to a question from the press asking if President Biden would be "willing to sit down with [House] Speaker [Kevin] McCarthy [R-CA]" to negotiate over a Republican "standalone item" to increase the debt limit, stating "we've been very, very clear we are not negotiating over something that is their constitutional duty."

  • Jean-Pierre: "Again, we are not negotiating... As we've been saying over and over again if Republicans want to talk about a budget and want to discuss what they believe is fiscally responsible show that to the American people... we want to see their budget."
  • Congress departed yesterday on a two week recess, marginalising the prospect of informal negotiations amongst lawmakers. Officially there is still no sign either side is willing to meaningfully shift from a rigid position.
  • A standalone debt limit resolution by House Republicans is highly unlikely to gain any traction in the Senate and would certainly be vetoed by Biden, should it end up on his desk.
