White House Messaging On Economy Out Of Step With Voters

US

A new survey from Ipsos has found that Inflation, gas prices, and interest rates are the most important economic issues for voters. The survey, which gauges voter perceptions of economic trends, hints at why White House messaging which highlights progress on jobs and GDP growth is failing to resonate with voters who remain unconvinced, or unaware of the data.

  • The survey notes that voters are more likely to perceive the economy negatively than positively. For example, while respondents correctly identified inflation and interest rates as high, they incorrectly believed gas prices were rising and were largely unaware of GDP growth.
  • Ipsos summarises: "...many of the parts of the economy that are most important to us aren’t doing great compared to historical norms and we perceive that. And the parts that are doing well are less important to us, but we also don’t know that they’re doing well. That equates to a lot of peril in our perceptions."
