White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is shortly due to deliver a press conference to discuss the federal response to Los Angeles wildfires, alongside FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell. The presser comes amid politicisation of the crisis, with President-elect Donald Trump claiming on that President Biden wasted FEMA funds, “on the Green New Scam.” LIVESTREAM
- In response to the fires, Biden cancelled a trip to Italy that was intended to be the final international trip of his presidency and included plans for a final face-to-face meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a final major foreign policy speech.
- Yesterday, Biden announced that the federal government will pay for 100% of the immediate disaster response costs, noting he will ask Congress for more funds to assist with rebuilding efforts: "I'm going to make an appeal right now to the United States Congress.”
- Politico reports: “Congress may not consider new aid for California to deal with its devastating spate of wildfires until mid-March, when Capitol Hill faces its next government funding deadline.”
- The New York Times writes: “The economic cost of wildfires in Los Angeles could exceed $50 billion,” noting in a later report: “The devastation has more people asking one hard question: Has this part of California become uninsurable?”
- Semafor reports: “The four fires raging across Los Angeles could cost insurers as much as $20 billion in losses, JPMorgan said this morning, more than double an earlier estimate.”
