Wires-Gas Emergency Plan Update Nxt Wk, Could Include 'Tougher Measures'

Wires reporting comments attributed to unnamed Italian gov't source regarding the country's energy situation.

  • Says gov't will update its emergency plan for gas next week, and will not announce gas rationing for now. The updated emergency plan is set to include 'tougher measures' in case of further cut or stop to Russian gas flows.
  • Says that Italy does not plan additional gas savings for now, and that Rome has reduced dependence from Russian gas to 18% from 40% previously.
  • Source says a key measure for Italy is to have a new floating regasification vessel ready for use by Q123.
Comes after outgoing PM Mario Draghi called for a EU-wide cap on Russian gas prices while speaking at a conference yesterday. Draghi stated that “The Italian government has pressed hard at the European level for a maximum ceiling on the price of Russian gas that we import,...Some countries continue to oppose this idea because they fear that Moscow could interrupt supplies...But the many blocks on supplies of Russian gas this summer have shown the limits of that position."
