UK: With the details of the Brexit deal available, focus now shifts to political
activity in Brussels and London over today, tomorrow and Saturday.
- In Brussels, the UK gov't is supposedly seeking to convince the European
Council (formed by EU member state heads of gov't) to rule out any further
extension. This would present UK parliament with option of accepting the deal or
a no deal Brexit on Oct 31. Council summit takes place today and tomorrow.
- In Westminster, furious Conservative whipping operation begins to get as many
votes as possible. All Conservative MPs (288) added to the 19 former
Conservatives that lost the whip would still fall marginally short of a majority
(320 votes), and it is no guarantee the former Conservatives, or indeed hardline
ERG members, will support the deal. Would require some Labour votes given DUP
voting against it.
- Should the EU refuse gov'ts request to rule out an extension, it opens the
door to parliament seeking to attach a second referendum amendment. EU can only
halt this by offering UK a short extension period where referendum couldn't take
place.
