WSJ-IAEA DG Grossi To Meet With Foreign Min During 6-8 May Trip

IRAN

Laurence Norman at WSJ posts on X that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafel Grossi's, "trip to Tehran is now confirmed. The missing piece of what was reported — meeting in Tehran with Abdollahian (and possibly [chief nuclear negotiator and Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri-Kani] ) — is happening. Grossi will, as reported in Iran, likely participate in the Isfahan nuclear conference."

  • Earlier in the week, Iranian state-linked outlet Mehr reported that Grossi would travel to Iran for the Isfahan conference and meet 'officials' in Tehran, but did not identify the individuals in question.
  • In Feb, Grossi said he would visit Iran soon as relations between the IAEA and Tehran had been 'drifting apart'. He has previously warned about the level of uranium enrichment being carried out at Iran's nuclear sites. While the pace of enrichment has slowed, the amount of fissile material reaching 60% purity continues to raise concerns about the prospect of Iran developing nuclear weapons.
