Xi Arrives In Kazakhstan Ahead Of SCO Summit, Putin Meeting

CHINA

Chinese state media has confirmed that President Xi Jinping has arrived by plan in Kazakhstan's capital, Nur-Sultan, ahead of tomorrow's Shanghai Cooperation Organisation leaders' summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

  • The trip is Xi's first foreign visit since the COVID-19 pandemic. Tomorrow he is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the SCO sidelines. Meeting with Indian PM Narendra Modi not confirmed yet.
  • Having Xi's first foreign meeting in years in Central Asia with SCO heads seen as a clear sign of intent from Beijing regarding what countries it sees as geopolitical allies.
  • No timings set for Xi-Putin meeting yet. Given Samarkand's time zone (GMT+5) should it take place in the mid-morning there it would be middle of the night east coast US, early morning Europe. If it is an afternoon meeting in Uzbekistan then it could come early morning east coast US, middle of the day in Europe.
