Xi To Putin-All Parties Should Promote Proper Resolut'n In Ukraine

Chinese state-run CCTV reports that President Xi Jinping held a telephone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin Earlier today.

  • CCTV reports Xi stated in call that "all parties should responsibly promote a proper resolution of the Ukraine crisis'.
  • The two leaders are due to meet virtually at the BRICS summit being hosted by Xi on June 24, the first time that the group of major emerging markets has held a leaders' meeting since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.
  • There remains significant Western focus on China's stance towards Russia and the war in Ukraine. Initial concerns that the invasion could see a much closer relationship between Beijing and Moscow seem to have dissipated somewhat. The extreme difficulty Russian forces have faced in combating a resolute Ukrainian defence have led to speculation that Beijing sees Moscow as an unreliable and erratic actor on the international stage. This stands in stark contrast to Beijing's historically cautious and measured approach on foreign policy and military issues.
